History

ACSUS was formally established during a conference held at Duke University in 1971. A link to the program of that first conference can be found below.  Until 1975, the Association was managed through the Canadian Center at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of the Johns Hopkins University. Between 1975 and 1984, ACSUS was an affiliate of Meridian House International. In 1982, through the generous assistance of the Exxon Education Foundation, ACSUS established its secretariat in Washington, D.C., and in 1984, ACSUS became completely independent and relocated to the National Center for Higher Education; the relocation was due in part to the Association's rapid and dramatic growth and the assistance of the William H. Donner Foundation. As of January 2014, ACSUS relocated to the University at Buffalo - The State University of New York, where it was headquartered until 2019. Early that year the association moved its secretariat to Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts. When digitizing the ACSUS archives we came across the program for the 4th ACSUS Biennial conference held in Burlington, Vermont in October 1977.  We attach it here for those interested in seeing a piece of our history!

If anyone has photos from past ACSUS Biennial meetings or other items of historical interest to members that could be shared, kindly send them the ACSUS Secretariat for scanning and uploading to our site).  When doing so, kindly let us know if you'd like the items returned to you.
