Raymond Tatalovich (1943-2023)

ACSUS and the broader Canadian Studies community mourns the passing of Dr. Raymond Tatalovich, a highly respected and widely published political scientist and Canadianist, who taught at Loyola University Chicago for 40 years. He passed away on June 21, 2023, at the age of 79.

A graduate of Ohio University, he earned his PhD from the University of Chicago. Among his many publications were The Rise and Fall of Moral Conflicts in Canada and the United States (with Mildred Schwartz, 2018), "Judicial Activism vs. Restraint: The Role of the Highest Courts in Official Language Policy in Canada and the United States" (with C. Michael MacMillan, published in ARCS in 2003), and The Politics of Abortion in the United States and Canada (1997).

Professor Tatalovich's work played an important role in advancing the field of Canadian Studies in the United States in general, and the study of Canadian politics in particular. We join with his colleagues and students in honoring his excellent career and achievements as a scholar and mentor.
